With all the recent cop drama nationwide, the NYPD hasn’t gotten much negative media heat until now. Detective Ian Cyrus was suspended by authorities after it was discovered he was stealing cash from a Brooklyn deli.

Officials suspended Det. Cyrus after he was seen pocketing nearly $3,000 in cash during a cigarette raid at the Yemen Deli & Grocery store in Bed-Stuy. A person at the store sold an uncover police officer untaxed cigarettes, better known as “loosies,” thus prompting the raid. The 49-year-old veteran cop is seen on video reaching into what appears to be a box below the cash register and places an bundle of cash into his pocket while turned away from the rest of the commotion.

The store’s manager, Ali Abdullah, said the cash Cyrus snatched was part of his rent money for the store. Abdullah explained his side of the story to local news outlets, including CBS New York, and said at first he didn’t know the money was missing until he looked at a surveillance video later.

The $2,650 in cash that Cyrus is accused of stealing was not part of the NYPD’s register of seized items from the deli raid. The NYPD launched its investigation into Cyrus after Abdullah called 911 to report the theft.

NYPD Internal Affairs didn’t launch an investigation until news outlet WABC contacted them according to the Huffington Post. WABC was the first of the outlets to obtain the video.

Cyrus has been suspended without pay and two other officers have been demoted to modified duty. Cyrus has not made any public comments about the case.
