The city of Chicago was rocked again over the holiday weekend by the latest fatal police shooting, this time involving a Black 19-year-old college student and a 55-year-old mother of five. Quintonio LeGrier and Bettie Jones were shot and killed by the Chicago Police Department early Saturday (Dec. 26) morning after responding to a domestic disturbance.

According to accounts, LeGrier was an engineering student at Northern Illinois University but also suffered with mental issues. His father, Antonio LeGrier, called police on Saturday because his son was banging on a door with a baseball bat. Jones, a neighbor of the family, lived on the first floor of the apartment building and was shot as she opened her door.

More from the CBS Chicago:

A Chicago police officer responding to a domestic disturbance call Saturday accidentally shot and killed a 55-year-old woman, who was among two people fatally wounded, police said late Saturday.

Relatives said Bettie Jones lived downstairs from Quintonio LeGrier, the 19-year-old subject of the initial call to police, who also was killed by the officer.

Officers who responded to the call “were confronted by a combative subject resulting in the discharging of the officer’s weapon,” the Chicago Police Department said in a brief statement.

“The 55-year-old female victim was accidentally struck and tragically killed,” reads the statement, which extends “deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends.”

The families of the victims are accusing the police of overreacting.

The Cook County medical examiner identified the man killed as 19-year-old Quintonio Legrier and the woman as 55-year-old Bettie Jones. Both victims were black and from Chicago. Jones was described by her family as a mother of five.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel issued a statement regarding the fatal shootings, which comes on the heels of new details in the LaQuan McDonald shooting coming to light.

“Anytime an officer uses force the public deserves answers, and regardless of the circumstances, we all grieve anytime there is a loss of life in our city. With that in mind, I have been informed that the Independent Police Review Authority has opened investigations into each shooting, and that all evidence will be shared with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office for additional review in the days ahead,” said Mayor Emanuel.

LeGrier’s mother, Janet Cooksey, was not there at the time of the shooting but said that the police were excessive in their approach. Mr. LeGrier told the Chicago Sun-Times that the white or latino officer that shot and killed his son knew that he “messed up” and overreacted by shooting blindly into the apartment hallway.
