Korryn Gaines, a 23-year-old Black woman living in Randallstown, Md., a city just outside of Baltimore, was shot and killed by Baltimore County police officers in a hours-long standoff. Gaines was reportedly armed with a shotgun and exchanged fire with police before she was taken down while her 5-year-old son was also struck by bullets.

The Baltimore Sun reports:

Baltimore County police said they shot and killed a woman Monday after she pointed a gun at officers and threatened to kill them during an hours-long standoff at an apartment in Randallstown.

Police identified the woman as 23-year-old Korryn Gaines. A 5-year-old boy in the home was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound but is expected to survive, police said.

It is not yet clear whether police or Gaines shot the child, according to police.

Gaines’ uncle, Jermaine Barnett, said the child was Gaines’ son. Police said they had not confirmed the relationship between Gaines and the child.

An investigation regarding the shooting is still ongoing and given the recent tensions locally regarding the Freddie Gray case, authorities are carefully navigating the incident via transparent media reports.

The Sun writes that police visited Gaines’ apartment to serve arrest warrants against her and a man who also lived in the residence. The man fled the scene with a 1-year-old child of unknown gender but was later caught by police.
