As the artist formerly known as Young Jeezy prepares to drop Trap Or Die 3, he tells HipHopWired why he’s messing with a classic franchise and explains his switch from being “Pastor Young” on his last album.
Ever since Jeezy announced that he was going back to his roots on his new mixtape Trap Or Die 3, the main question has been “why?” The first Trap Or Die is a certified classic and the second one decent, so why come back for a third trip?
“It’s playing with fire, but I’m just gonna throw some lighter fluid on that sh*t, I’m a brand you can trust when it comes to what I do. I’m all the way in my bag on this one.”
The tape will be Jeezy’s first full length mixtape since 2015’s Gangsta Party hosted by DJ Drama. It will also be his first offering since his last album Church In These Streets. Leading up to that album Jeezy adopted the nickname “Pastor Young” with the music taking a more spiritual tone. So naturally, one can wonder how and why Jeezy can go from the church right back to the trap so fast.
“It wasn’t a change, I just felt like that was necessary,” he says about the Church album. “For somebody like myself, we ain’t really tripping because the money already made. So I feel like I can take a stand like that. People do things for money but don’t take a stand for what they believe in. I felt like the timing was right for Church In The Streets, so I did that. But now I’m back to what I do. Don’t get me wrong that was something that need I felt needed to happen, but I’m still the same person. I got humble beginnings, but at the same time I’ve been through all this sh*t that all my people going through. So I gotta always let people know what it is.”
