Rapper Vic Mensa tapped into Chicago’s rich house music history on a track titled “Down On My Luck.” Premiered by BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, the record displays the up and coming MC’s range as a song maker.

Despite an off-kilter rhyme style, the Save Money affiliate possesses a certain commercial appeal due to his ability to weave in and out of different pockets of a beat and his affinity for harmonizing. Mensa displays both talents in full force on the Stefan Ponce-produced song. This cut is a new frontier for the Windy City wordsmith, but he sounds more than comfortable on the uptempo sonics. This isn’t too shabby for his new “international single.”

Coming off of 2013’s INNANETAPE, we hope that “Down On My Luck” indicates that Mensa is penning a new body of work. Stream the record below and give us your thoughts in the comments.
