OG Maco is easily one of the strongest breakout rappers we’ve seen in the past few years. After making his presence felt on the national radar with the undeniable “U Guessed It,” he easily eclipsed one-hit wonder status with a series of mixtapes and EPs.

Of course, this was all done from underneath the umbrella of the respected Atlanta independent label, Quality Control Music. After signing with a joint venture with Capitol Music Group and Motown Records, it was announced that OG Maco’s album, Children of the Rage, would also benefit from the major label boost.

Seeing that the majors are often perceived as “the enemy” these days, it opened up curiosity as to why OG Maco would pit himself in such terrority. Naturally, the shrewd MC has a logical explanation for it.

While walking the 2015 BET Awards red carpet, he told Hip-Hop Wired the method behind his major label backing.

“When you dealing with someone like me who’s always fighting the good fight, he explained, “you find someone like Motown and Ethiopia [Habtemariam] who wants to champion that fight with you–you gotta take that chance because it’s not one that’s going to come around many times.”

He also attested to Motown’s legacy to selling him on the deal.

Watch our exclusive OG Maco interview above and look out for his studio debut album dropping this fall.
