Chance The Rapper, Donald Glover and Colin Kaepernick are among the many recognizable names in TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People In The World issue. Each person named to the list had an accompanying blurb about them written by someone who had an impact on their life.

Chance, who has grown from a rap star to a Chicago superhero, made the “Pioneers” list due to his trailblazing career as an independent artist knocking down industry barriers. He’s also paved a way for younger activist looking to make an impact on their communities when the government turns a blind eye. His blurb was written by fellow Chicagoan and rapper Common, who shared a story about calling Chance as a child.

“Years ago, my grandmother asked me to call her friend’s grandson,” he writes. “’I want you to give him some words of encouragement…He wants to be a rapper.’” She gave me his number, and I left him a message. I told him to keep following his dreams. Then I forgot all about it.”

He continued, “Years later, my teenage daughter played me a new mixtape she loved from an artist named Chance the Rapper. There was something unique and soulful about it—I could tell he really knew hip-hop. And when I first met him, I realized that he knew me too. ‘You won’t remember this…but you called me when I was a kid.’”

Glover was written about by Tina Fey and Kaepernick was written about by former coach Jim Harbaugh. Other big names on the list include LeBron James, Alicia Keys and John Legend. DJ Khaled also makes an appearance by writing the blurb for Snapchat creator Evan Spiegel.
