The situation unfolding in Charlottesville, Virginia took a dark turn in the wake of Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency in the city. A car plowed into the throng of gatherers in the city, leaving one dead and 19 others injured.
One person was killed and 19 were hurt when a speeding car slammed into a throng of counterprotesters in Charlottesville, where a “Unite the Right” rally of white nationalist and other right-wing groups had been scheduled take place, the city tweeted on its verified account.
The driver was later taken into custody, the city said in a news release. It did not name the person.
“I am heartbroken that a life has been lost here. I urge all people of good will — go home,” Mayor Mike Signer wrote on Twitter.
The city added that there were 15 other injuries associated with the scheduled rally.
Reports say the driver of the gray Dodge Challenger rammed one car from behind then reversed the vehicle down a packed street. Images have appeared of the carnage online and we must warn that some of those images are disturbing.
Adding to the overall intensity of situations on the ground in the city, a Virginia State Police helicopter crashed near the site of the protests, leaving two troopers dead.
