Halle Berry Discusses Domestic Abuse On CNN

Oscar winning actress Halle Berry was recently on CNN.

One of the topics she touched on was the effect of spousal abuse in not only her personal life but in her childhood also.

The actress known for her stunning beauty says she had an ugly upbringing watching her mother be a victim of domestic abuse.  She says it still plays on her mind to this day.

Before I’m Halle Berry – I’m little Halle growing up in this environment, that damaged me in some ways, she says. And I’ve spent my adult life trying to heal from that. I think I’ve spent my adult life dealing with the sense of low self-esteem that implanted in me. Somehow, I felt not worthy.

As a part of her personal healing process, Berry now volunteers at the Jenesse Center for domestic violence victims in Los Angeles, where part of her volunteer work includes helping to rebuild run down apartments and homes, so women who leave abusive relationships have a place to stay.

I come here sometimes and I see the kids, I play with the children. So I’m just regular old crackers to them, and I love just being regular old crackers, I have to say,” she says. “I have a spot in my soul that understands the devastation that this causes a family and how hard it is to rebuild your self esteem when you have suffered.

According to statistics, over 2 million women and men report that they have been physically assaulted by a spouse or intimate partner, annually.

Berry who has reportedly been in abusive relationships herself says there is only one option when in that situation.

Get out – don’t stay a moment longer,” she says. “If there’s no shelter, go to a friend, go to the police station, go somewhere, but go.
