On the day that his Ambition album hit stores Wale was spotted at a local Maryland high school rewarding students with a surprise performance.

According to WTOP, the Maybach Music rapper surprised around 400 students at Capitol High School in Prince George’s County with a special concert.

The select students with good grades, perfect attendance and positive behavior were initially told they would have the last period off for a special program to reward them for their accolades.

WTOP reports that they watched as their peers played games and modeled clothing when the lights suddenly dimmed, and the D.C. native appeared.

Speaking on his time at the high school he tells the paper,

“These are the highlights of my life. This wasn’t even possible when I was in high school, we had no rappers. The thought of anybody walking through that door, it’d be like, okay, what, a quarterback for the Washington Football Team? Gus Frerotte?”

Speaking on Tuesday’s album release date he added,

“It’s probably the best day of my life. When you leave high school, you kind of realize that you haven’t really put your all into anything. You have to live enough of your life to know what it’s like to put your all into everything, and this is the first thing that I’ve ever put my all into.”
