The Newark N.J. woman who was saved from  a burning building, says that she owes her life to Mayor Cory Booker. In an interview with local news station, My9 TV, just before she was released from the hospital, Zina Hodge, expressed her gratitude towards Booker, who pulled her from her bedroom and  carried her to safety.

Hodge has little recollection of the rescue because she was asleep when the fire broke out in the kitchen of her second-floor apartment, last week. “I didn’t even see him,” she said of Booker. “I don’t even remember him picking me up. But I heard him — calling me. I’m blessed, man. If Cory wouldn’t have come in there and rescued me I would have died in there.”

The 47-year-old was admitted to the Saint Barnabas Medical Center’s intensive care unit, in Livingston, N.J., where she received treatment for burns on her legs and back, and smoke inhalation.

On the day of the fire, Booker came home to find members of his security team banging on the door of his neighbor’s complex. He immediately sprung into action, entering the unit, coming to Hodge’s rescue, and burning his right hand and in the process. Although the mayor was admitted to the same hospital as Hodge, for both his burn and smoke inhalation, he was released within hours of his arrival.

Aside from his mayoral duties, the 42-year-old is known for doing good deeds. He once shoveled snow for a senior citizen unable to do the job, and is the honorary Vice Chair of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Campaign, which fights childhood obesity by encouraging young people to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.
