It’s still tough to believe that Heavy D is gone. The Mt. Vernon representing MC passed away due to a pulmonary embolism last November, but nevertheless remains in our Hip-Hop hearts thanks to the pioneering musical legacy he left behind. Today is the Overweight Lover’s birthday and longtime collaborator Tony Dofat and renowned Hip-Hop producer Pete Rock, who happens to be Hev’s cousin, spoke on the late artist.

“He definitely had the ear,” said Pete Rock. “I taught him how to sequence stuff and make patterns. He caught on once I showed him how to do it. What he felt on the inside of his soul is what he projected out in his music. He’d tell you how he wants it perfectly. I could see it through his eyes sometimes, that’s why it was so easy to work with.”
