Michelle Obama has the blood of white slave masters running through her veins. The first lady’s DNA was traced back to Northern Georgia, where it was revealed that she comes from white ancestors.

Although white lineage is not uncommon in Black people, a story the New York Times tracked down one of Mrs. Obama’s relatives, a white woman by the name of Joan Tribble. As the great-great granddaughter of slave owner, Henry Wells Shields, Tribble is one of many white relatives of Mrs. Obama’s “You really don’t like to face this kind of thing,” Tribble said of the role that her relatives—who are buried on family property—played in slavery.

Along with her family in Georgia, Mrs. Obama has kinship to whites living in different states, including South Carolina, Alabama, and Texas. “I can’t really change anything,” she added, noting that her goal is to meet the first lady one day. “But I can be open-minded to people and accept them and hope they’ll accept me.”

Of course she’s not the only one in the Obama household with a mixed background. President Obama is bi-racial, born to a White mother and an African father.
