Dirk Nowitzki is off the market. The Dallas Mavericks star married his Kenyan-born wife, Jessica Olsson, in a traditional ceremony celebrating her culture. In accordance with Kenyan rules, the Kikuyu wedding held by Nowitzki and Olsson, marks an announcement of the union, and is meant to allow both families to get to know each other.

For the occasion, the couple donned traditional garb, with Olsson being presented with a hand-woven bag known as a kiondo, by elderly Kikuyu women.

As a well-known group found predominately in Northern Kenya, the Kikuyua tribe is the largest in the country, and wedding celebrations are a huge social affair. On the eve of the wedding, the groom will visit the bride’s family to help with wedding arrangements. The grooms are often asked to hand over various goods, after he is let into the compound.

On the wedding day, the groom’s family heads to the bride’s house to “collect her,” and they head over to a church for the ceremony. Western influence has changed some of the practices of Kikuyu weddings, including wedding pictures, which were not previously incorporated into the ceremony.

Nowitzki and his new bride will also hold a second wedding in Germany, for his family.
