Muslims around the world marked the end of the Ramadan holiday over the weekend, but one ceremony was tainted by the presence of none other than bacon. The NYPD is investigating the incident, which occurred at an event Sunday (Aug. 19) in New Dorp Beach on Staten Island, N.Y., where strips of bacon—consumption of which is prohibited in the Islamic faith—were found on the grass.

“This has been determined to be a bias event on the part of our Hate Crimes Task Force,” said NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly. “Oh a website associated with this celebration was some derogatory comments and at the site itself, three packages of raw bacon were found.”

According to NY1, the website, whose name has yet to be revealed, included disrespectful comments like: “I am going to walk my pet pig and I am gonna’ let him take a nice, fat dump…just in time for morning prayers.” Kelly announced that the department is looking to track down the commenter, known only by the handle “007 Midland.”

In a post-911 society Muslims have long been the recipients of hate crimes which spiked after the attack on the World Trade Center. The shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin earlier in the month, was carried out by a racist former member of the U.S. Army who mistook the South Asian worshippers for Muslims.

Ironically, just as the NYPD is standing behind Muslims in investigating the bacon incident as a hate crime, they have also spied on those belonging to the religion in hopes of unearthing terrorist plots. The end result was an embarrassment for the department as it not only an admitted act of profiling, but turned up no results.
