As promised, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, hosted President Obama for a $40,000 a ticket fundraiser at the 40/40 club in New York City, Tuesday (Sept. 18). Fresh off his trip to the Late Show with David Letterman, Obama gushed over Beyoncé, calling her great role model for his two daughters “because she carries herself with such class and poise.”

He also thanked Hip-Hop’s favorite power couple for their “friendship,” and said that First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters, Sasha and Malia, were mad at him because they were unable to attend. “Usually they’re like, ‘We’re glad you’re going–we don’t need to go.’ But every time they get a chance to see these two [Jay-Z and Beyoncé,] they are thrilled, partly because they are just both so generous, particularly to my kids. Malia and Sasha just love both of them.”

The president also explained his vision for pushing American forward in the midst of economic turmoil. Like Mrs. Obama’s speech during the Democratic National Convention, the POTUS spoke on American’s ability to make something out of nothing. “The good thing about so many of us here–and I know I speak for Jay and Bey–is we remember what it’s like not having anything, and we know people who were just as talented as us that didn’t get the same break, the same chance,” he said.  “We remember some of our parents or grandparents who came here as immigrants and got a little bit of help along the way to go to that school or be able to start that first business.”

By night’s end, the Carter’s raised $4 million for the president’s re-election campaign.
