DJ, writer, basketball junkie and avowed sneaker fiend Robert “Bobbito” Garcia has left his mark on the world of Hip-Hop and its distant cousin, street basketball, long ago. Capturing a vision he began in 2003 with a quarterly publication focused on “streetball,” Garcia can now add the title of director to his list of accomplishments. Sitting down with Hot 97’s Angie Martinez yesterday, the former Hip-Hop radio host was on hand to promote a new documentary Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC – which focuses on the b-ball battles on the hard tops.

After Angie Martinez blew up her spot in admitting she would listen to Garcia’s celebrated rap radio program “The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show” when she was at work on her own late-night show, she quickly moved in to mentioning the upcoming documentary that Garcia co-directed with fellow hoops enthusiast and videographer Kevin Couliau.

“I’ve had worked on camera, and I was like ‘let me test being behind the camera,’” said Garcia, a former Puerto Rico professional basketball player. “I needed someone to roll with me, and his name was Kevin Couliau. So what we did was in 75 days, we went to 180 courts in the five boroughs of New York city.

Couliau and Garcia have previously worked with one another on the BOUNCE basketball magazine, and managed to snag some big names in the world of street basketball for the doc.

“We got some pretty big names in the film. Pee Wee Kirkland, Fly Williams, Kenny Smith, God Shammgod. A lot of playground legends but then a lot – just as importantly – a lot of people that you would never know unless you come across them at your local park. And to that court, they’re legends.” The film also  features the likes of NBA Hall Of Famer Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Smush Parker, and Kenny Anderson among others.

Doin’ It In The Park makes an official one-time screening tomorrow (September 21) at the Urbanworld Film Festival at 5:45pm. For more details, follow this link.
