After 17 years behind bars for murder charges, two wrongfully convicted inmates will finally be set free, that is, when their ankle tracking bracelets arrive. Eric Glisson, 37, and Cathy Watkins, 44, have both served nearly two decades for the shooting death of cab driver Baithe Diop. Today a Bronx judge vacated the convictions of both Glisson and Watkins, clearing them of the 1995 murder and setting them free. However, due to a lack of availability of the tracking ankle bracelets, a common practice in New York for newly released inmates, the two will have to stay at Rikers Island until Wednesday (Oct. 24), when the bracelets will become available again.
As expected, family members of the two are upset about the extended stay, but grateful that their loved ones will return home soon. “It’s hard, you know going to school and hearing other girls talk about their dad and the time they enjoyed together. It’s hard for me,” said Glisson’s 17-year-old daughter, Cynthia Morales. Adding insult to injury, a condition of the release permits the Bronx District Attorney’s Office the ability to re-prosecute Watkins and Glisson if further compelling evidence is discovered within the next 90 days of receiving ankle monitoring.
