A bizarre case in Texas is unfolding involving Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Tyron Smith, who is contending with the trappings of newfound wealth and the struggling pockets of family looking to fill their coffers. Standing 6-foot-5 and a massive 308 pounds, Smith’s imposing frame wasn’t enough to keep him from filing a protective order against his mother, stepfather, and five siblings earlier this summer.

The latest run-in involving Smith and the family occurred this week when authorities were called to his North Dallas home to remove family members looking to shake him down for cash, reported The Dallas News.

The 21-year-old Smith has endured a string of events where his family has tried to squeeze money from the second-year left tackle. After signing a four-year, $12.5 million contract with the Cowboys in 2011, Smith graciously gave his family an undisclosed amount of money but apparently it wasn’t enough. On Tuesday (October 30), authorities responded to a 911 call from Smith’s home where two of his three sisters and an unidentified individual showed up at the residence to “harass and torment” the player for money as reported by police. During training camp this year, Cowboys security had to remove one of Smith’s family members from a facility in Oxnard, Ca. according to Dallas News.

A source for ESPNDallas close to the situation told the network that the former USC standout has been fighting back the pressure from his family, which also includes two brothers, since beginning his NFL career. Speaking with ESPNDallas, Smith’s attorney John Schorsch says the events are taking a toll on his client. “This is hard on him. But he’s handled this with dignity and grace, I’m proud of the manner in which he’s handled it,” said Schorsch.

Smith declined comment during the Cowboys’ practice session Wednesday.
