Former Detroit Deputy Mayor Anthony Adams was charged with weapons possession Wednesday (Oct. 31) for bringing a loaded gun into the Detroit Metro Airport, last month.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office brought the misdemeanor charge against Adams, reports the Detroit Free Press.

Adams was arrested at the airport on Oct. 18, when the handgun was found in his laptop bag. He told police that he was rushing and forgot to remove the weapon, which he carries for protection. Police held on to the gun even though it was registered to Adams, and he had a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon.

After passing background checks, Adams was eventually allowed to get on a plane, but missed his scheduled flight to Philadelphia.

A former employee of disgraced Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, Adams’ resume also includes tenure as the former president of the Detroit school board.

Adams is one of many others who have accidentally brought guns to airports. In September, a flight attendant brought a 38. Caliber Smith and Wesson Airtight revolver to the Philadelphia International Airport. She had a permit to carry the gun, and—like Adams—forgot to remove the weapon from her bag.

A pre-trial hearing in Adams’ case has been scheduled for Nov. 29.
