Jon Burge, a former Chicago police lieutenant, faces 45 years in jail for lying about the torture of suspects during the 1970s and 1980s.

A jury found Burge guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice Monday after five convicted felons testified said that he and his officers shocked, suffocated and burned them into giving confessions.

As previously reported three of those felons were freed after they say they were tortured into giving false confessions by the lieutenant.

Leroy Orange was freed after spending 19 years in jail for the murder of four people including his girlfriend and her son, after he says Burge suffocated, shocked and beat him into a confession.

He was awarded $5.5 million that will be awarded to him in five installments until 2014 and an additional $525,000 for his troubles.

42-year old Ronald Kitchen and 50-year old Marvin Reeves were freed after spending 20 years behind bars for the murders of two women and three children in 1988.

Reeves told prosecutors that Burge hit him in the head with a telephone, punched him in the face and kicked him in the groin to make him falsely confess.

Prosecutors say Burge didn’t act alone and plan on filing additional charges on the officers involved.

For decades, dozens of suspects — almost all of them black men — claimed Burge and his officers tortured them into confessing to crimes ranging from armed robbery to murder.
