In an exclusive interview with our friends over at HipHopDX, Pharcyde member Slimkid3 (formerly Slim Kid Tre) breaks down the background behind the recording of their classic debut LP Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde and how he thought early J Dilla tracks were actually A Tribe Called Quest frontman Q-Tip recording under a different handle.
Although Slimkid3 still has love for the brand and is filled with fond memories of the past, painful instances over the years have strained the formerly close rappers and dancers who forged a bond well over 20 years ago. ““We hung out. We hung deep. Our sh-t was pretty f—ing deep, to be honest with you,” Slimkid3 says of the quartet’s friendship. “Real deep.”
The group’s debut album Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde will be celebrating its 20th year of release this November and because of the record’s staying power and cultural impact, Delicious Vinyl recently released a 3CD/7-inch vinyl deluxe edition boxset. Although all four members have not performed on the same stage in years, Fatlip and Slimkid3 performed under the group moniker sans Imani and Bootie Brown. The distance between his former partners has seemed to hit Slimkid3 hard.
“They want people to look at them as The Pharcyde like me and Fatlip never existed. You can’t do that. We’ve made history already,” revealed Slimkid3. “You can never erase us from history. I think its pride. Whatever wrongs done in the past on all sides… We’re all capable of working things out and cooperating but they’re not choosing that route because they want the world to see them as The Pharcyde. It doesn’t make sense to me.”
