Late in 2012, Complex held a poll on who would be the “Man Of Next Year” in music. Mac Miller was the winner and thus, takes the publications online cover as a part of “Man Of Next Year” week.

Miller, who will be starring in a new MTV2 series called Mac Miller And The Most Dope Family, spoke candidly to Complex about the perils that came with success. One of the most interesting bits of the interview was the criticism of Blue Slide Park sending him into addiction despite it’s massive commercial success.

“There’s no way the album was as bad as that particular reviewer made it out to be,” E. Dan, of I.D. Labs told Complex of a review from Pitchfork.  “It felt personal. It wasn’t like, ‘Here’s why I don’t like it musically,’ it was more like, ‘Here’s why I don’t like Mac Miller.’”

Complex reports that the criticism compounded with the stress of the Macadellic tour drove him to start using, and eventually become addicted to promethazine.

“I love lean; it’s great,” says Mac. “I was not happy and I was on lean very heavy,” he admits. “I was so f**ked up all the time it was bad. My friends couldn’t even look at me the same. I was lost.”
