Three years ago, Hip-Hop lost Keith “Guru” Elam of Gang Starr fame. The Boston bred, Brooklyn representing MC’s legacy will be cherished and today we get a look at the electronic press kit from Gang Starr’s 1991 album Step In The Arena, and it’s loaded with jewels.

The video, ripped from a VHS copy, features Guru and DJ Premier offering interesting insight into their formation and motivation. “Gang Starr in general, for us represents the street knowledge…intellect, itself. I mean, cause we both are college educated,” explained Guru. “”There’s a spiritual element, too. We try to bring that all out in the music.”

This EPK worth watching just to see Chubb Rock big up Gang Starr while properly using the word vector. But more importantly it provides some history about the seminal rap duo. DJ Premier provides insight into how Gang Starr hooked up with Spike Lee, who placed the “Jazz Thing (Remix)” on the Mo’ Betta Blues soundtrack.

But the biggest mind blower, is that a University of Virginia professor [Note: Wahoo Wa!] wrote a poem about jazz, which Brandford Marsalis then gave to Guru to flip into “Jazz Thing’s” lyrics.

Watch the full EPK below. Rest In Power Keith “Guru” Elam.
