Talib Kweli is gearing up to release his fifth studio album Prisoner Of Conscious May 7, but gave listeners a early preview of the project via Billboard’s The Juice.

The album contains something for old fans and new listeners alike, as the Brooklyn MC mixes social and political commentary with common life scenarios to paint a vivid picture throughout 14 tracks, 17 if you include the bonus songs.

We’ve already received a sampling of what’s to come with “Push Thru,” featuring Kendrick Lamar and Curren$y, the RZA-produced “Rocket Ships,” and “Come Here” just to name a few. Other features on the LP include Melanie Fiona, Ryan Leslie, Nelly, and Marsha Ambrosius.

“I feel like when people talk about real life emotions and real life feelings they resonate longer, longer than rappers who talk about gangsterism, sex and violence and longer than rappers who just talk about hip-hop, how real they are how and how underground they are. I wanted to make an album that really spoke to the lives that people are living,” said Kweli during a sit down with Billboard.

A few of his influences for this project was Lauryn Hill’s Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and Andre 3000’s Love Below. Listen to Prisoner of Conscious below, and let us know if you enjoy it in the comments.
