Billboard has compiled a list of all of the songs that topped its Hot Rap Songs Chart for the 25th anniversary of the segment for the magazine. While some classic rap smashes are peppered through the 100 song list, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis‘ mega-hit “Thrift Shop” lords over them all according to their numbers.
It would be exhaustive to try and name every act on the entire list but focusing on just the top 10 alone makes for an interesting discussion just the same.
At the 10 spot is Digital Underground’s immortal track “The Humpty Dance” followed by Waka Flocka Flame’s “No Hands” no less. The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Big Poppa” gets the nine spot, and Craig Mack’s futuristic funk banger “Flava In Ya Ear” sits at seven. Coolio’s “Gangta’s Paradise” gets the six spot to round out the bottom half.
The list really gets interesting from there as lady vets Salt-N-Pepa’s “Expression” holds the five spot, with the aforementioned Macklemore & Ryan Lewis getting slot number 4 with “Can’t Hold Us.” Missy Elliot’s “Hot Boyz” rocks out at number 3, and the 69 Boyz gets the runner up position with “Tootsie Roll.”
That leaves “Thrift Shop,” the song and viral video that turned the Seattle duo into superstars. It’s hard to front on the track’s staying power and once you hear the hook, it lives on inside your head long after you hit stop on the player.
