Tensions are high in Tulsa, Okla. after a video clip showing Black unarmed man Terence Crutcher being gunned down by an officer despite being in a submissive position. Officials are urging calm in light of the video’s release, and Crutcher’s family is demanding justice against the offending officer.
Details are still developing but what local source NewsOn6.com reports is that Crutcher was shot and killed Friday night by a white female officer after he was approached by police after his vehicle stalled. Based on what the video displayed and the accounts of the family, Crutcher was never in a position to threaten the officer. They also stated that officers were heard calling Crutcher a “big bad dude” and other related chatter.
The reaction on Twitter has been understandably robust given the nation’s climate around police shootings and Black victims. Coupled with the current conversation struck by Colin Kaepernick’s protest of the National Anthem in light of said shootings, the timing of the matter is especially a difficult thing to process for many.
