Frank Ocean tells The New York Times why Blonde will not be winning any Grammy Awards this year.

Frank Ocean turned heads when he dropped his Endless visual album and made everybody forget about it the next day when he dropped his real album Blonde. Then, he raised even more eyebrows when it was revealed that he and his team failed to submit the album to the Recording Academy for Grammy award consideration. The album would have been a sure lock for at least a nomination, if not a multiple award winner.

Many wondered if the move was a mistake or done on purpose. Frank tells the Times that it was indeed on purpose.

“That institution certainly has nostalgic importance,” he says. “It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down. I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated. I’d rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience.”

Frank didn’t explicitly state that he’s sitting out the Grammys to fight injustice or oppression though.

Frank also opened up about how his love life has changed since Channel Orange saying he hasn’t had any love of lasting importance.
