Meek Mill claims that back in October 2012, Philadelphia police jailed him without cause and posted his photos on Instagram. The Maybach Music Group rapper, born Robert Williams, is now suing the City of Philadelphia and police Officers Andre Boyer and Michael Vargas in Federal Court for civil rights violations, false imprisonment, invasion of privacy and civil conspiracy and is seeking punitive damages (read: mula).
Courthouse News Service reports that in his complaint, Meek (the plaintiff) states that on October 31, 2012 he was driving a Range Rover when he was pulled over around 7:30 p.m. by Officers Boyer and Vargas “without cause or justification” near the intersection of 11th Street and Girard Avenue.
Meek was handcuffed and taken into custody. The rapper claims during this time—he was held for nine hours—the officers took photos of him that made it onto Instagram and other social media outlets. Meek was eventually released in the early morning of the next day (4:30am, Nov. 1) without being charged with any crime.
As Hip-Hop Wired previously reported, on November 1, 2012, Meek took to Twitter to say that he was “harassed and violated” by Philly police.
Because of the hold up, Meek claims he missed a promotional appearance in Atlanta. While he was being held, Meek missed the private jet he booked to fly him down to the ATL that nice and was forced to refund its deposit. Missing the date, and being locked up, meant “the loss of numerous sponsorships and endorsements; the loss of plaintiff’s solitude, seclusion and privacy; the anxiety and embarrassment associated with plaintiff being placed in a false light; and the anxiety and embarrassment of being seized, detained, confined and imprisoned against plaintiff’s will.”
For his trouble. Meek is seeking monetary compensation for “civil rights violations, false imprisonment, invasion of privacy and civil conspiracy.”
Just last night, Meek Mill dropped a new song called “From Da Bottom,” that will be appear on his forthcoming Dreamchasers 3 mixtape. The “Amen” rapper’s debut album, Dreams and Nightmares, was released on October 30, 2012.
