Just like any person with their given name, artists are very particular when it comes to the spelling of their stage names. Case in point, Shawn “Jay Z” Carter—actually, his record label—has let it be known that his name no longer has a hyphen, like everyone is used to.

Billboard magazine’s Editor-In-Chief relayed this news via his Twitter yesterday (July 17). “Breaking: Jay Z has dropped the hyphen from his name, according to his label. I am not kidding. (Wish I was.) Copy editors: take note,” read the tweet.

If you’re a serious Jay-Z fan, you may recall that in the 90’s it sported an umlaut; Jaÿ-Z. As Complex reports, Hova actually dropped the hyphen three years ago.

Also, Jay Z is still pronounced “jā zē.” Okay, carry on with your lives.
