As we anticipate any inkling of word from the upcoming Superman / Batman film,  fans of the Dark Knight and video games have some good news to hold them over for awhile. Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment confirmed that Batman: Arkham Origins will ship into stores with a multiplayer mode that allows gamers to take the battle to the e-streets and enable them to play with friends and foes.

Developed by Warner Bros. Games Montréal, the title expands on the Gotham City universe and introduces an original prequel storyline set several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. As Batman engages crime in only his second year on the job, the unrefined crime-fighter faces a defining moment early in his career that sets his path ablaze to become the Dark Knight. Along the way, players will meet many important characters for the first time that shape the Caped Crusaders’ life through these key relationships.

Blending the award-winning gameplay of Arkham with third-person shooter mechanics, Splash Damage (Brink, Enemy Territory) will establish the online mode.

The multiplayer mode offers players the chance to hunt evil as Batman or Robin, the Boy Wonder, against the most challenging opponents in Gotham City: your own friends and/or other gamers online. You can also take on the role of a super-villain and get a glimpse at what it is like to be on the dark side with The Joker or Bane as they establish their own legacies by taking down the Dynamic Duo. The Clown Prince of Crime and Dorrance are even available for gamers to play if they’re looking to turn the tide in any match.

Rifles, shotguns, grenades and remote-controlled aerial bombs are at your disposal when you count yourself among Bane or Joker’s minions. And as you and your friends try to down the Dark Knight, there will be plenty of third-person goon warfare to go around.

Batman: Arkham Origins will be available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC on October 25, 2013. Funny enough, there’s been no mention made as to why the Wii-U had been omitted from the press release, and a Warner Bros. representative could not be reached for comment at press time.
