Macklemore is winning, and has been since he and Ryan Lewis’s The Heist impacted radio. The successful independent rapper came through New York’s Power 105.1 to talk rap beef, Kendrick Lamar’s “Control (HOF)” verse, trying to defeat the sophomore jinx, and more with The Breakfast Club.
“I think that life is about trying to fight fear to be present. That’s a big part of my artistry, writing through that,” Macklemore explained. This brutal honesty shined in the Seattle native’s singles “Can’t Hold Us,” “Same Love,” and most notably “Thrift Shop,” which were the driving forces behind his rise to the top.
Finding success in the pop market has certainly increased the 30-year-old’s earnings, but he still considers himself to be a true lyricist at heart and thinks his talent can be heard in The Heist. In turn, Charlamagne asked why he didn’t respond to Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” verse.
“I think that every single rapper when that record dropped spent that night writing angry, battle raps. I was definitely one of them,” said Macklemore. The former XXL Freshman loved what the TDE rhymer did for the climate of Hip-Hop, but he never revealed whether he planned to drop a rebuttal.
