At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, one of the earlier surprises of the night occurred when Macklemore & Ryan Lewis captured a “moonman” for Best Hip-Hop Video – and beating out some big names in the process.

Going up against Drake’s “Started From The Bottom,” A$AP Rocky’s “F—in’ Problems,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools,” and J.Cole’s Miguel-assisted track, “Power Trip,” the Seattle duo’s win with their video “Can’t Hold Us” divided some users on Twitter.

“Miley Cyrus is twerking, Macklemorewinship hop video. What’s next, white folks drinking Colt 45?” tweeted @DawnEnglehart. @AlexGruneiro added, “I honestly hope macklemorewins everything Along with Kendrick Lamar Since frank ocean Tyler the creator earl sweatshirt and big Sean can’t.”

The pair also won another award, nabbing a moonman for Best Video For A Social Message for their pro-gay rights anthem, “Same Love” and expressed heartfelt thanks to fans and supporters although the response from inside the Barclays Center seemed muted at best. Lil’ Kim and Iggy Azalea presented the Best Hip-Hop Video Award, with the pint-sized Brooklyn MC looking thicker in the thighs than usual.

Before the official ceremonies, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis also nabbed the Best Cinematography Award for “Can’t Hold Us.” as well.
