Kanye West‘s claims that he “don’t do no press” on “Mercy” are void pretty much void in 2013. Yeezy has been conducting plenty of interviews in support of his Yeezus album and its namesake tour, and interestingly, he recently told The Russ Parr Morning Show that he didn’t receive a dime in royalties from Nike for his Air Yeezy signature sneakers.
Reports Counter Kicks:
With buzz buzzing that Kanye West has left Nike for the adidas Y-3 label helmed by Yohji Yamamoto, the rapper appeared on The Russ Parr Morning Show last Friday to talk about his aspiration to be the next Walt Disney, who inspires him, and the considerable impact his daughter North has had on his decision making, among other things.
Apparently, Kanye made his decision to leave Nike with North’s welfare in mind because, as West claims in the radio interview, he didn’t see any royalties from Nike for the sale of his wildly popular Air Yeezy sneaker series.
“If it’s for myself, I would have been cool just sitting in Nike not getting no royalties,” West said. “Letting people line up for the Yeezys and not… you know. When I’m having negotiations and then I go and look in my daughter’s eyes…when I go and negotiate after that I’m like ‘Oh y’all ain’t finna talk to me like that. We finna get this money right.’”
We’re not going to do the math but both models of the Nike Air Yeezy and their respective colorways were all very limited edition releases. So if you’re not moving that much quantity (the sky high resale values were due to their relative rarity), the royalties for the shoe probably wouldn’t be that substantial to begin with.
Also, surely Mr. West didn’t lend his services to Nike for free. Lastly, what was his lawyer doing?
