In Omaha, Neb., a video featuring a cursing Black toddler released by the police union in an effort to bring to light the “cycle of violence and thuggery” shocked many as it went viral. The toddler and three other children have been taken into protective custody, police said on Wednesday (December 8).

The video, posted by the Omaha Police Officers Association, show the toddler knocking over a chair as adults coach the boy on how to use profanities. The little boy flips the middle finger in the camera, as the adults can be heard egging the child on. The union curiously said the video depicted the so-called “thug cycle” which prompted heavy criticism. Although police say nothing illegal took place on the clip, the situation is exploding across various channels.

From Omaha World-Herald:

A toddler shown in a controversial video shared by the Omaha police union has been placed in protective custody along with three other children in the household, police said Wednesday.

Police said they removed the boy and the other children because they were concerned about the youths’ well-being and safety.

Police did not release their names or relationship to each other.

Police said the City Prosecutor’s Office has determined no crime occurred in the video, which shows adults, who are off-camera, exchanging profanities and sexual comments with the toddler.

Willie Hamilton, president of Black Men United, fired a shot at the union for producing the clip.

“For them to take a video out of context, a 2-year-old who doesn’t have the brain capacity to know what’s going on, and to say that this child, because two adults acted inappropriately, is going to end up in a life of crime is totally inappropriate,” said Hamilton.

Omaha’s police chief and the ACLU were also critical of the release of the clip, saying that it could agitate tensions between police and the city’s minority community. A quick look at the police union’s website show that they’re continuing to support the “thug cycle” campaign and posted new content.
