It was a given that NFL prospect Michael Sam would face his fair share of criticism after revealing that he was gay and very proud of the fact.

The 24-year-old has received verbal support from the Obama’s, Commissioner Roger Goodell’s openly gay brother and several of his potential pro football peers, but it is his own father who is having a hard time wrapping his mind around the news of having a homosexual son.

It is being reported that upon receiving a text with the startling revelation, Michael Sam Sr. immediately needed some alcohol in his system.

Via The New York Times:

Last Tuesday, Michael Sam Sr. was at a Denny’s near his home outside Dallas to celebrate his birthday when his son sent him a text message.

Dad, I’m gay, he wrote.

The party stopped cold. “I couldn’t eat no more, so I went to Applebee’s to have drinks,” Sam Sr. said. “I don’t want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment.

“I’m old-school,” he added. “I’m a man and a woman type of guy.” As evidence, he pointed out that he had taken an older son to Mexico to lose his virginity.

Sam Jr. won the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and was likely going to be drafted without much fanfare but since his announcement on February 9, his sexuality has been a trending topic on every social media site and sports channel.

Geraldine Sam, aunt of the younger Michael and sister of Senior, was much more benevolent in her reaction, telling Fox Sports, “He’s made history. He really has made history and I’m really proud of him.”

Meanwhile Michael Sam Sr. thinks that Hall of Fame defensive end Deacon Jones is “rolling in his grave.”
