The end of an era will be coming to the Bronx. Today (February 12), New York Yankees second baseman Derek Jeter announced that he will be retiring after the 2014 baseball season.

The Yankees captain made the announcement via a Facebook post. Jeter opened by saying, “I want to start by saying thank you.”

Another part of the message reads, “For the last 20 years I’ve been completely focused on two goals: playing my best and helping the Yankees win. That means that for 365 days a year my every thought and action were geared toward that goal. It’s now time for something new.”

Jeter was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1992 before he made his major league debut in 1995. Over a 19 year career, all with the Bronx Bombers, he won five World Series championships. Also, he’s dated a gang of beautiful women like Mariah Carey and Minka Lee (you care).
