YG has already proven he knows how to sell records in the early stages of his career and he’s already looking to share to wealth.
During his ride down south to Houston, the “Bompton” native checked in with his hometown homegirl Devi Dev at 93.7’s The Beat to give the dish on what made his My Krazy Life a classic (in his eyes) and his future venture as a record label owner with DJ Mustard and Ty Dolla $ign.
The budding rap star was obviously more faded than his 90s hairstyle but he still offered up a bit of exclusive information for fans to get their excitement building with his movement. “Me, Mustard and Ty Dolla $ign got us a little situation. Push Ink the label. Ty$ own part of it…Mus own part of it..I own part of it,” he said, amping up his tone. “You know it’s about to get real out here! We about to bring back when Snoop and Dre and then Jay [Z] first started, we about to bring that back. I remember growing up when I was looking at TV; it ain’t that. So I’m in it for that.”
Speaking of Snoop, Dre and them. YG revealed the secret to making his album so fluid was doing a bit of extensive homework by studying a handful of classic debuts. He admitted to being heavily influenced by Snoop Doggy Dogg’s Doggystyle, The Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready To Die, 50 Cent Get Rich or Die Tryin’ during the creation of the album. And of course, no West Coast production masterpiece is complete without taking notes from Dr. Dre’s last solo opus, 2001.
It just goes to show everyone that history class can and will pay off–if you actually pay attention. Check out part one of his H-Town interview below and part deuce on the next page.
