President Obama gave a ceremonious nod to his now-classic Between Two Ferns skit by actually conducting the annual White House Correspondents Dinner speech while standing with the plants on each of his side.

“Before I get started, can we get the new presidential setup out here,” the President asked before two of his assistants promptly marched in carrying the green garnish over as a trumpeted overture started to blare over the speakers. The black tie onlookers instantly picked up on the joke and began to laugh and applaud furiously.

“It’s worked before,” he quipped.

The event was emceed by E! The Soup show host Joel McHale, who managed to proudly lack any chill amongst the distinguished guests. One of his more low brow moments was when he dug at former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton’s pregnancy saying, “In nine months we will officially have a sequel to “Bad Grandpa.” It also raises the question: When the baby is born, do you give Bill Clinton a cigar?”

If you have an hour to kill check out the entire first segment of the 2014 White House Correspondents Dinner below and part two on the next page. Richard Sherman’s passionate post-game speech and Nevada rancher’s racist comments were just a few of the topics that were covered along the way.
