After trolling us all with their top 20 female rappers list, XXL is seeking redemption by giving their 2014 Freshmen list a grand rollout on national TV.

Today, May 5 a.k.a Cinco de Mayo, 106 & Park will be the platform the magazine uses to announce their new school roster and a great deal of people have been highly anticipating it.

In 2008, XXL shifted the hip-hop landscape by co-signing the new breed of rappers on the rise. Dubbed “Leaders Of The New School,” the first group (Lupe Fiasco, Lil Boosie, Joell Ortiz, Plies, Saigon, Rich Boy, Gorilla Zoe, Young Dro, Papoose, and Crooked I) used the moment to shine and further build momentum for their growing careers.

The following years consisted of more research, longer debates and passionate discussions on deciding who should be deemed the next rappers to be hip-hop’s breakout stars. Many of our selections have been on point—Kendrick Lamar, YG, Future, Big Sean, Macklemore, to name a few—while others have viewed it as a proper step up the proverbial ladder to the top. Last year, for the sixth anniversary, we tagged the 2013 XXL Freshman class as “Best Ever?” that sparked controversy and became a huge conversation starter.

It’s getting harder to determine who is eligible for this lottery but this year, several prominent artists such as Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Bibby and Jon Connor all campaigned, so it should be interesting to see who made the final cut.

DJ Drama is the doubling as the master of ceremony for this year’s class and he has a special public service announcement below.
