Michael Phelps swims better than most fish but apparently he drinks like one too. US Weekly is reporting that the Olympic gold medalist racked up the second DUI of his life when he was clocked going more than 40 miles over the speed limit (84 mph in a 45 mph zone).
The incident occurred early Tuesday morning in Maryland’s Fort McHenry Tunnel. Maryland Transportation Authority Police said Phelps was spotted driving his white 2014 Land Rover erratically and crisscrossing through the tunnel’s double lanes. When pulled over, Baltimore police noted he was visibly drunk as he failed multiple standard field sobriety tests. Although the famous Olympian was operating a vehicle perfect to cause a scene, authorities say he was cooperative as he was apprehended.
Phelps’ other DUI came when he was just 19-years-old, US Weekly finds. He pleaded guilty to drunk driving and was subsequently sentenced to 18 months of probation. He reportedly told the judge the mistake would serve as a learning tool for the rest of his life. Well, he’s still living, obviously.
Hearing of Phelps’ wild boy behavior probably doesn’t surprise those who have followed his career. In 2009, he was photographed smoking out of water pipe, resulting in loss of sponsorships and a three-month suspension from USA Swimming.
