In a case of tragic irony, a man died trying to cross the street to get to a funeral home last Friday  (Sept. 27) night.  Bruce Johnson, 51, was struck by a Jeep Compass while making his way to the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Dover, Del.

Johnson of Goldsboro, Md., was not in the crosswalk, when he stepped right into the path of a 2008 Jeep at around 8:16 p.m., Dover Police Department spokesman Cpl. Mark Hoffman said.  He was taken to Bayhealth Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

No other injuries were reported. The driver of the vehicle that Johnson will not be charged, Hoffman said. Neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor in the incident.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision and can provide additional information into the investigation to call the Delaware Police Department at 302-736-7122.
