A few months ago, Wendy Williams was brought on as a producer on Lifetime’s Aaliyah biopic, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B. The former radio host turned TV personality was critical of the production before she came onboard and made it her mission to be sure the film mentioned the late singer’s relationship with R. Kelly.

While discussing the success of her talk show, The Wendy Williams Show, she mentioned making sure certain details made it into the aforementioned biopic.

Reports the Orlando Sentinel:

When she sounded off on her show about a movie on the late R&B singer Aaliyah, Lifetime reached out to get her involved. One of Williams’ concerns: What did Aaliyah’s father say when the 16-year-old singer brought home 28-year-old R. Kelly? The movie, the first from Wendy Williams Productions, premieres Nov. 15.

“We let you know what happened with Aaliyah and R. Kelly,” Williams said. “Nothing is distasteful. You don’t want to be distasteful, but you need to tell a story.”

Aaliyah and R. Kelly were infamously married, when the former was just 14, in 1994. Her parents annulled the marriage less than a year later in 1995.

Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, starring Alexandra Shipp, is set to premiere on November 15 on Lifetime. Watch the Sentinel‘s interview with Williams below.
