DC clearly isn’t trying to play second fiddle to Marvel when it comes to blockbuster movies. Today (Dec. 2) Warner Bros. Pictures announced the cast of the forthcoming Suicide Squad film, which includes Jared Leto playing “The Joker.”

As previously reported and speculated, Will Smith and Tom Hardy will be appearing in the film as Deadshot and Rick Flagg, respectively. Also confirmed are Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney (Divergent) as Boomerang and Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina) as Enchantress.

“The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one,” said Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, WB Pictures, while making the announcement. “David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote ‘Training Day’ and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara.  We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”

Ayer is writing the Suicide Squad script Ayer while Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns serve as executive producers.

The Oscar-winning Leto taking on the role of Batman’s most notorious foil will be hotly debated. The late Heath Ledger played The Joker in The Dark Knight, and is considered to have brought the Crime Prince of Crime to life. Meanwhile, Tom Hardy has comic to screen experience having portrayed Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.

The Suicide Squad movie is schedule for August 5, 2016.
