Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Garry Shider from Parliament and Funkadelic has died at age 56.

The legendary guitarist known to fans as “Starchild” or “Diaperman” had been battling brain and lung cancer since March.

Shider’s son, Garrett, says that his father died Wednesday at his home in Upper Marlboro, MD.

After being diagnosed with cancer,  Shider tried one more attempt at going on tour but had to stop because of his failing health.

Shider went from performing gospel music in churches in his native New Jersey as a young boy to being discovered by P-Funk mastermind George Clinton as a teenager. He quickly became a mainstay of the P-Funk musical family.

R.I.P. Garry Shider.
