The official cause of death of beloved musician Prince has been revealed. As many suspected, the Purple One died of an opioid overdose.

The news arrives per the Associated Press, who was relayed the info by law enforcement. Reportedly, the official spoke under the of anonymity since he or she was not supposed to be speaking to the media.

Per the New York Times, Prince accidentally overdosed fentanyl, a synthetic opioid. Reportedly, fentanyl is 50 times more powerful than heroin.

The authorities are still determining how Prince came into possession of and administered the drug. The medical examiner’s report (see on the flip) did not indicate how much the drug was in his system.

Prince’s untimely passing has put the spotlight on the dangers of pain medication and doctors who are to nonchalant about prescribing said drugs without taking into account their addictive properties.

Prince died on April 21 at the age of 57. Spike Lee and Sway Calloway will be hosting a party in Brooklyn this Saturday to commemorate Prince’s birthday, which is June 7.

Rest In Power Prince.
