HHW: You went to the University of Memphis to play football. Why didn’t you stick with it?

Renegade: Yeah, I played D-1, wide receiver, that’s a big deal. But the music was always in my heart, that’s all I really cared about. I used to have dinner with the team boosters, talking about football, but I was always thinking about rap. They would be asking me about stats and in my mind I’d be like, “I don’t care.” They would ask me, “do you think the running back is going to rush for 1,000 yards this season?” I would be like “go ask him.” It was like working a job and not wanting to be there.

I was praying for a sign to show me what to do. I was working at a Nike factory for a summer job and one of my homegirls told me I should make my past time my career. After that, I went and told my coach that I was done with football. I finished my workouts and they respected me for that because most guys would have just quit and not come back. After that I started selling mixtapes on the street. It was just school and mixtapes for me at that point. I was graduating as the mixtape was selling. I didn’t want to go to work in a cubical after school. So I took out a loan and got into Full Sail. It’s just been a journey ever since.
