A Bronx teacher gave one his students a brutal math lesson this week after the student allegedly ran off with money he gave him to get some weed.

NY Daily News reports that 48-year old Kevin Pope, a science teacher at John V. Lindsay Wildcat Academy, beat up one of his 16-year old students after he ran off with $4,000 that he gave him for weed.

The story goes that the teen told Pope that he had a drug connect back in June. Together, they went to visit the plug and talk numbers. Pope reportedly came up with $4,000 to get about a pound of weed. The dealer upped his price to $7,000, which caused the teen to back out of the deal and run off with Pope’s money.

Days later, Pope approached the teen and demanded his money back. Police say that when the teen refused, Pope beat him and stole his iPhone, wallet and a gold chain off his neck. Pope then threatened, “You better get me my money or I will kill you!”

If you’re wondering just how this kind of arrangement could happen, John V. Lindsay is a private charter school for older students who have dropped out of traditional schools or who have criminal histories. We’re not assuming that this couldn’t happen at a “regular” school, but just saying.

Pope is being charged with assault and robbery. Students, neighbors and co-workers were equally surprised saying that he was a kind man that was always willing to help and never appeared to be “shady.”

Playing with people’s money can bring out the worst in anybody. This kid must have listened to Plies‘ “Ran Off On The Plug Twice” too many times.
