Mahershala Ali and Theo Rossi, Cornel “Cottonmouth” and Hernan “Shades” Alvarez on Marvel’s Luke Cage, respectively, are both top-notch actors. Also, they are well-informed Hip-Hop heads that are most definitely part of the culture.
We learned this when we asked them for their Top 5 dead or alive Hip-Hop MCs and rather than just relying on the obvious (see: Jay Z, Biggie or Nas…), they hurled out names like Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler of Digable Planets, GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan and Keith “Guru” Elam of Gang Starr.
Also, Rossi named his son (partly) after Big Daddy Kane. Could the casting have been any better for the superbly Hip-Hop Luke Cage?
