Mr. Dalvin of Jodeci says that a Jodeci biopic has been in the works and that it will be dropping later this year.

With the massive success of BET’s The New Edition Storypeople are already wondering who should be the next Black music legends to get their own movie. Even before the NE movie though, Jodeci was at the top of the list of artists people want to see. Now it looks like it may be happening sooner than we think.

In an interview with Q102.1 FM in San Francisco, group members Mr. Dalvin and JoJo revealed that a Jodeci movie has been in the works since last September.

“They signed the process last September,” says Dalvin. “They finished the script, and it’s going into production next month. So we’re looking at an end-of-the-year release.”

Dalvin also revealed that VH1 owns the rights to the movie.

Although they were active for less than five years and only put out three albums, Jodeci’s contributions made a huge impact on R&B and Black music. When they hit the scene in 1991 they redefined what R&B was expected to sound and look like. There are plenty of stories that could be told in the movie. One is how they went from being the brainchild of Sean “Diddy” Combs during his time at Uptown Records to hiring his future rival Suge Knight as their manager and becoming affiliated with Death Row Records. Another is lead singer K-Ci Hailey’s volatile relationship with Mary J. Blige.

Jodeci would go on an indefinite hiatus in 1996 and didn’t release another album until 2015’s The Past, The Present, The Future.
